How to Write an Opinion Piece

An opinion piece is an article (online, in print or in a newspaper) that reflects a writer’s personal point of view about a specific topic. Opinion pieces often take a strong stance on controversial issues, so it’s important to be clear and confident in your writing.

Opinion articles are typically short and should cover a single issue or topic. Your viewpoint should be clearly stated in the first paragraph, and subsequent paragraphs should back up your position with factual or first-hand information. Toward the end of your article, you should suggest what readers can do to further the issue or cause.

Find a timely, relevant issue to write about. Look for something that is happening underneath the radar, like an invisible threat to public safety or a neglected scientific discovery. It also helps to have a “peg” to hang your piece on, such as a holiday, anniversary or election.

The more research you do, the stronger your argument will be. Be sure to cite your sources, review direct quotes and analyze their context.
