What is Neighborhood Alert?

Neighborhood alert is a program that allows neighbors to report security and safety issues in real time via digital reporting. It’s typically used in gated communities, apartment complexes and HOAs to improve communication and deter crime.

Neighborhood watch groups are comprised of residents who promote observation and communication to deter crime (Stegenga, 2000). They often organize activities such as block meetings, crime prevention presentations, neighborhood patrols, and community socialization. They also encourage non-intervention strategies for preventing crime and vandalism and emphasize the role of residents in helping police prevent and deter criminal activity (Yin, 1976).

It’s important to keep in mind that the goal of a neighborhood alert is not to create fear, but rather to promote awareness and safety within the local area. Using an easy-to-remember vanity number to communicate in emergencies is the best way to accomplish this. It’s also a great way for homeowners who are going to be out of town for an extended period of time to let their neighbor know so they can keep their eyes peeled for any suspicious activity.

The more familiar you are with your neighbors, the easier it will be for you to recognize when someone is out of place. Be sure to pay attention to the cars they drive, what kinds of pets they have and if they are having medical problems.
